The County of Bucks, the Township of Tinicum, and the Palisades School District along with other township and community organizations have come together to coordinate and host a community-wide America 250 Heritage Day at Tinicum Park to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. TINICUM TOWNSHIP
AMERICA 250 CELEBRATION HERITAGE DAY IS SET FOR MAY 16, 2026
Tinicum Township played a critical role in the success of the American Revolution, most notably with Col. Arthur Erwin’s participation to gather the boats for Washington’s Crossing of the Delaware Christmas 1776. Erwin’s ferry saw crossings of Revolutionary troops of both sides several times during the war. Evidence suggests that Tinicum’s residents, in addition to providing Continental troop companies and wagon transport , may also have been active manufacturers of munitions to supply the army during the war, and part of a network supply chain extending over several states.
How do we share this story? Our role is critical, yet our voices are silent. Many, both residents and visitors, are unaware of the brave and significant actions nurtured in the township 250 years age. I would like to recommend several ideas to encourage sharing the stories, educating young & old to appreciate both the history, and the ability of Tinicum to convey through its uniquely preserved landscapes and buildings the role our township played in the formation of our country.
THE 250th COLLABORATIVE:
Several groups and individuals are currently involved with sharing the area’s history. It is envisioned that such entities could collaborate to provide an organized plan for events, publications and markers. These include, but not limited to the Tinicum Township Historical Commission- Ethan Perry, Tinicum Civic Association, Tinicum Conservancy, County of Bucks Parks Department- Tinicum Park Amy Hollander holds events at the Stover House, Washington Crossing Sout Troop and Bob Cull’s cemetery committee, Erwin Family relatives, local Architectural Historian Kathryn Ann Auerbach and other individuals and groups- possibly connecting with adjoining townships as well.
The purpose of the group is to identify key points to celebrate, various methods of public sharing, temporary events and permanent markers or publications, etc. Ideally with such a semi-formal group established, grant monies could be sought to assist with carrying out these ideas. Certainly, the moral support of Tinicum Township, as the sponsor organization, is critical to the success of this celebration.
TIME FRAME:
Time is of the essence to affect several successful programs. It would be ideal to establish the “collaborative” this fall, have several events identified by early Spring 2026 and seek grants and follow through on projects through end of 2025 (or beyond as it evolves). Truly significant in setting a quality format for public education are the varied events staged by Amy Hollander at the Erwin-Stover House. With her assistance and permission, it may be possible to customize events for 2026 and possibly add several new ones. Ideas on publications and permanent markers require substantial lead time, thus there is urgency in that sector as well. It would be ideal to garner participation from area schools, the Palisades School District and private schools, to expand the value of this important educational experience.
