Emergency Level -Drought Conditions in Tinicum and Region

Rainfall continues to elude our region. A record has been set for continued precipitation-free days in October. This changes the precipitation factor from WARNING to EMERGENCY, while the other factors remain in a NORMAL status. This does not imply that the drought conditions across the region are of less concern as irrigation (watering) needs and fire threats exist.

However, as it affects the groundwater level, approximately 60% of the groundwater recharge occurs from December through March. So rainfall, in the coming months, is extremely important to future groundwater levels. Local groundwater data supports the continuation of NORMAL status for this factor, at this time.

In addition, the Local Hydrologic Status (formerly Local Drought Watch) has been updated to reflect the recent groundwater level readings in our network. The lower rainfall amounts we have experienced this Fall has resulted in a change of the precipitation factor from WATCH to WARNING. The other factors remain NORMAL: https://bntgroundwater.org/local-hydrologic-status-report/

Water conservation practices should be followed. The precipitation amounts this Winter will determine our groundwater levels next Spring.

Remember, “waste not, want not” and practice water conservation.

Thank you.
